Number Plates Terminology

What is a number plate?

The number plate is the legal way of displaying your car registration number. Each car is allocated its own registration number by the DVLA and it is the way that it is easily identifiable. The number is printed on to the plate and displayed on the front and the back of the car. It is a legal requirement that every vehicle displays its number plates so they are clearly visible and they therefore need to be kept clean.

What is a personalised plate?

Many people like the ideal of having a personalised number plate. They feel that it gives their car some personality and also makes it easily identifiable by themselves and people that know them. A personalised plate might have your initials, name or nickname or maybe shortened version of your name on it. Some people choose a word, maybe something which describes their personality or their career.

Who are the DVLA?

The DVLA are the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency and they deal with all of the vehicle licensing in the UK. If you want to change your car registration you need to work through them and also buy your registration through a company which is registered with them and therefore legally allowed to do so. They will be able to change the legal documents associated with your car to display the new registration number. This would include the tax, MOT and registration documents.

What is a cherished plate?

Personalised plates which are for sale, are often categorised. Cherished number plates refer to those which are normally just one word or maybe two and so the name or word used is very clearly visible. Many people like to choose a name like ALEX 1 or perhaps a word like STAR 73 or maybe even something to do with their job like B4NK3R. These types of plates tend to be the most expensive because they are the ones that most people would like to have.

What is a prefix number plate?

Prefix number plates are those which are more conventional in style but still older and different to recently issued ones. This means that it would be obvious that it was a personalised plate because the date on the plate would bear no relation to the age of the car. Most people would notice this. However, the plate would still be made up of letters and numbers, but maybe not as many as on a more modern plate.  So you may get something like A222 ROB or BIG 123X.

What are current number plates?

Then current plates would refer to something which is in the style of plates being produced at the moment. These are probably the cheapest type of plates available as they do not have so much scope for spelling out good words. They might have something like YY57 BOB or SA10 SAM.

What about Irish plates?

Some people like the idea of having an Irish plate, perhaps because it provides them with more options with regards to the registration that they would like to have. It can be just as simple to buy an Irish plate as any other and the choice for you will be increased and therefore it could be something worth considering.
